The pulmonary clinic at the VA hospital in Ann Arbor is a very busy and exciting part of this great new facility. Hundreds of patients come every hour to be seen by the top specialists in the field. At this time, I would like to thank all the doctors who have taken the time to explain to me their work and let me see their patients.
Much of my experience at the clinic has come with the aid of Dr. Paul Christenson. He allowed me to watch a surgery in which a cathoder was inserted into a patient's throat so that oxygen could be given directly into the trachea. This is a considerable improvement over the previous method where oxygen must be given through the nose. The patient is more able to move around because oxygen usage can be turned down up to 200% from previous levels. This leads to more exercise ability for the patient and smaller oxygen storage tanks.
Several other patients come to the pulmonary clinic
because of years of smoking. Their lungs have been destroyed
thus. High resolution CT scans and other X-ray methods reveal the
true capacity of the lungs to sustain the individual. I soon
hope to have pictures of scar tissue in the lungs on this web site.
